Swara Bhaskar is an Indian actress who works in the Hindi film industry. She rose to fame with her starring roles in Indian cinema and independent films winning accolades for films like Nil Battey Sannata, and garnered further praise for her supporting roles in mainstream films of the Hindi film industry, including Ranjhana, Tanu Weds Manu, etc.

Since her college days in JNU, she has been known to be quite vocal about social issues and till date has found herself involved in various controversies.

Controversies: ·      

Swara has been a voracious critic of the CAA and had been the face of the protests in December 2019. The star belongs to a minority of actors who chose to speak up against the government’s decision to grant citizenship to a select group of minorities, which excluded Muslims-a move that triggered nation-wide protests across India. ·      

She also voiced her strong opinions against the arrest of student activist, Safoora Zargar, who was charged and jailed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, under which it is nearly impossible to get bail. Zargar’s incarceration in the overcrowded Tihar jail had caused a lot of concern, especially at a time when India was under a strict lockdown to fight the coronavirus pandemic.  

Legal Tussles:        

In the year 2019, a complaint was filed against the actress by NGO Legal Rights Protection Forum in the  National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and demanded action against her, for using swear-words against a four-year-old on a chat show whom she worked with in an advertisement shoot during her early days in the film industry. ·      

In February 2020, The Delhi High Court issued notice to the Centre, Delhi government and Delhi police on a plea, filed by advocate Sanjjiiv Kumar, seeking hate speech FIRs against Swara Bhasker, activist Harsh Mander, Radio Mirchi’s RJ Sayema, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and others.

It also seeks an investigation by the National Investigation Agency into these people, for allegedly inflammatory speeches made by them. With regard to Swara Bhasker and others, the plea seeks FIR under Section 295A, Section 153, Section 153A, Section 504, Section 505 and Section 506 IPC is sought against the Swara Bhasker, in connection with the CAA protests and the February Delhi Riots.
