BACKGROUND – Chanda kochhar is one of the few famous and successful women of India in the field of business. She got recognition as the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank. She hails from a Sindhi family from Rajasthan. She was born in Jodhpur, grew up in Jaipur and also completed her schooling from there.
She began her career as a management trainee in ICICI in 1984 and since then she has climbed up the ladder of success through numerous promotions. Kochhar being a Gold Medalist in Cost Accounting and Management Studies was a key person in development of the bank during the 1990’s.
She has shaped the retail banking sector of India and gave it a new direction through her efforts. Under her leadership ICICI bank won Best Retail Bank of India Award 4 times in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
She was appointed as a president of International Monetary Conference. She was also a board of member of National Institute of Securities and Prime minister’s council of Trade and Industry. Forbes listed her on its World 100 Most Powerful Woman list.

1984 – She got employed as the Management Trainee in the ICICI bank.
1994 – She got promoted to Assistant General Manager.
1996- Promoted to Deputy General Manager.
1998 – She elevated to the post of General Manager of the Bank.
2001 – She became the Executive director
2006 – Got Appointed as Deputy Managing Director.
2007 – Promoted to Joint Managing Director and was made Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
2009 – She became the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO)

4 October 2018 – She stepped down from the position of CEO.
CONTROVERSY –
In 2016 activist Arvind Gupta who was the first whistleblower in this case wrote a letter to Prime Minister regarding the illegal business relations between Videocon group and Chanda Kochhar and her husband. Venugopal Dhoot who was a promoter of Videocon has allegedly provided a huge amount of money to her husband’s company after she has passed a loan for Videocon group of 3250 crores. ICICI bank appointed a committee under former SC judge BN Srikrishna to probe the matter and CBI and ED also started investigations.
In January 2019 CBI booked her and her husband for cheating and fraud committed against ICICI bank. Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a criminal case against Kochhar and others for money laundering.
