BACKGROUND – Bhupesh Baghel was born on 23 August 1961 in Durg District, Patan, Chhatisgarh. He is the son of Nand Kumar Baghel and Bindeshwari Baghel. His family’s primary occupation is agriculture.

UPBRINGING & EDUCATION – Bhupesh was good in study from his childhood days. As he was born in Patan but he did his post-graduation from Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur.

WALK OF LIFE – Bhupesh initiated his political career from Indian Youth Congress and became member of All India Congress Committee. He was elected to Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1993 for the first time from Patan, and was later elected five times from same seat.

MAJOR INITIATIVES TAKEN – For several years, he has been organizing the mass marriage ceremonies to promote marriages with minimum expenditure.

Bhupesh was leading the Indian National Congress in State Assembly Election in 2018.

  • 1985: Joined Indian Youth Congress.
  • 1990: Became the President of Indian Youth Congress in Durg District and served until 1994.
  • 1993: Elected to Madhya Pradesh Assembly from Patan constitutency.
  • 1994: Appointed as Vice-President of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress and served for one year.
  • 1998: Re-elected to Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Patan and appointed Minister of State (In Public Grievance Dept.) in the government of Digvijaya Singh.
  • 1999: Promoted as Minister of Transport in the same government in December.
  • 2000: Appointed as Chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation in January and when Chhatisgarh came into existence, Baghel became the first Minister for Revenue, Public Health Engineering and relief work and remained until 2003.
  • 2001: Became Member of Madhya Pradesh Sainik Board.
  • 2003: Became a member of Chhatisgarh Legislative Assembly from patan Constituency and was the deputy leader of Opposition until 2008.
  • 2004: Candidate for the Parliamentary Election from Drug Lok Sabha constituency.
  • 2009: Candidate for the Parliamentary Election from Raipur Lok Sabha seat
  • 2014: State President of Indian National Congress.

CONTROVERSIES/CASES

In October 2017, his name appeared in Sex CD Controversy. He faced conviction of distributing of fake Sex CD containing the objectional footage of Chhatisgarh Minister Rajesh Munat. CBI found Baghel guilty and sent him to 14 days judicial custody.
