Supreme Court puts stay on Gujarat HC order of granting leave of absence to Narayan Sai

The Supreme Court puts a stayed on Gujarat High Court order of granting leave of absence for two-week to the rape convict Narayan Sai.

Narayan Sai is the son of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

A Division Bench comprising of Justices D. Y. Chandrachud and M. R. Shah issued the notice while hearing a plea filed by the Gujarat Government against the order of granting leave of absence to the rape convict.

On 24th June, the single judge bench of Gujarat High Court granted the rape convict leave of absence.

Narayan Sai was alleged with rape charges, the case was filed by one of his and his father Asaram’s former devotees. The sister of the victim had filed the case against the Asaram.

Narayan Sai was convicted under Section 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 323 (assault), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code on April 26, 2019, by the Surat Court.

The Surat Court had sentenced him to imprisonment for life.

Earlier, last year in December he was granted leave of absence by the Gujarat High Court seeing to the ill health of Narayan Sai’s mother.

The Supreme Court will further hear the matter in two weeks.
