The Supreme Court of India had responded to a Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking, the introduction of weekly off and eight hours shifts in all police stations. The Hon’ble Court has issued a notice to Union Territory of Chandigarh, State of Punjab, and the State of Haryana. The SLP is filed after the High Court of Punjab and Haryana dismissed a PIL by order dated 09.12.209. The PIL sought implementation of eight hours shift pattern and weekly off in all Police Stations/Posts, as recommended by the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
The Petitioner also pointed at Section 22 of Indian Police Act, 19861 which says “Every police-officer shall, for all purposes in this Act contained, be considered to be always on duty, and may, at any time, be employed as a police officer in any part of the general police-district”.
The Petition is represented by Dr.Sumati Jund along with advocates from TAS LAW. All the state governments are party to the Writ Petition.
