The Tripura High Court on 17th September, 2021 observed that the Citizens of the States, as well as the Country, shouldn’t suffer due to the faulty system and software of the Government for issuing Death Certificates.

The Bench of Justice Arindam Lodh was hearing the Plea of Abhijit Gon Chowdhury whose wife died in Bangalore and had applied in the Agartala Municipal Corporation for issuance of the Death Certificate of his wife, submitting all the required documents.

Abhijit Gon Chowdhury claimed that over 3 months have passed since the death of his wife, but he had not been provided with the Death Certificate.

The Municipal Corporation in its defence stated that the delay is because of the Government’s software in Agartala. The software doesn’t allow the entry or record of any person outside Agartala Municipal Corporation.

The High Court directed the Corporation for the issuance of the death certificate within 48 hours. The Court further remarked that if the same Petition is filed by any citizen, a cost of rupees 5 Lakhs will be imposed.

Furthermore, the State-Government was directed to take up the matter with the concerned Authorities of the Union of India to resolve the problem.
