Supreme Court spurned the Plea against deconstructing the aircraft INS Viraat

On Monday 12th April 2021, honourable Supreme Court dismissed the petition which was filed against the construction of INS Viraat, Aircraft. 

Basically INS viraat was decommissioned by Indian air force and it was finalized that the aircraft would be used as a maritime museum.

The petitioner Rupali Sharma stated, “Kindly handover the aircraft carrier for turning into a national treasure, instead of dismantling it.”

To this honorable Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde stated, “You have come too late.”

Initially the similar case was filed in the Bombay High Court. But the Bombay High Court didn’t stop the dismantling of INS Viraat.

Consequently, a special leave petition was filed by the petitioner against the judgement of Bombay High Court in the supreme court but this petition got dismissed.

Basically, the suggestion to the petitioner from Bombay High Court was to approach the ministry of defence requesting them the same. 

Upon approaching the ministry of defence, the petition stood rejected matter was closed instantly. INS Viraat got decommissioned in the year 2017.

Special leave petition against the judgement of Bombay High Court was filed on 27 November 2020.

The apex court ordered for a status quo on dismantling of INS viraat aircraft on 10th February 2021.

It met it’s fate of decommissioning in 2017 after providing service to the Indian navy for nearly 3 decades, the aircraft was thereafter sent to to Alang, Gujarat for the purpose of dismantling.
