The Supreme Court of India rejected the Plea for Interim Bail by Samajwadi Party’s Member of Lok Sabha Mohammad Azam Khan. The Samajwadi Party Leader was seeking the Interim Bail due to the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The Supreme Court Division Bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai was hearing the Interim Bail Application by the Petitioner Azam Khan. The Supreme Court Bench denied to grant him the Bail however, gave him the liberty to approach concerned Courts with a request for disposal of his Bail pleas expeditiously.

The Supreme Court Division Bench in the current matter, pointed out to the Petitioner that “How can you file 32 Petitions to seek Bail? Don’t bring politics in Court.”

The Petitioner responded to this statement of the Supreme Court Bench while stating that “I am inside prison for nothing. Where do I go my lord? I am not bringing any politics into it.”

The Counsel for the Petitioner, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, stated that the Allahabad High Court refused to hear his Bail Pleas and that even when the Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao had asked the High Court to hear the matter expeditiously, the High Court refused to grant the Petitioner any relief.

The Lok Sabha Member of Parliament is presently in Sitapur Jail since 2020 as he is facing charges against himself in many cases vis-a-vis land grabbing cases, encroachment cases etc. Many of these cases are filed against him by the currently ruling Bhartiya Janata Party Government in Uttar Pradesh.
