Supreme Court Judge Indira Banerjee withdraws from Bengal post-violence case

Queency Jain –

Supreme Court Judge Justice Indira Banerjee, who herself is from Kolkata, withdraws herself from hearing the case of Bengal’s post-poll violence saying, “I do not wish to hear the case. Not before me.”

The withdrawal decision comes after the Supreme Court asked the Government to explain the post-poll violence of Bengal to which the Government has maintained its stance calling it to be politically motivated.

The Government has stated that not every act of violence can be considered as post-poll violence and even if it comes under the ambit of post-poll violence, the same happened at the time when the Election Commission was in charge of law and order of the State.

Post-poll violence includes the killing of BJP workers, attacking women members, looting of shops, rape, etc. to which 2 gang-rape survivors have requested the Court for a Special Investigation Team or the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate their cases.

Now after the withdrawal by Justice Banerjee, the case will be transferred to another bench.
