Supreme Court issues Notice for timely Disposal of pending Criminal Appeals

The Supreme Court of India has issued notice regarding the timely disposal of pending Appeals filed against conviction before the High Courts.

The Court in its notice also mentioned that these Appeals are being looked after by the High Court Legal Services Committee.

A Bench comprising Justice SK Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh gave such directions after observing a detail exercise conducted by the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee.

In its conducted exercise, the Committee made a chart in which it listed of all criminal Appeals which were pending before the Delhi High Court and shared the list of the conducted exercise with the National Legal Services Authority.

The Appeals which were pending before the High Court was being looked after by the High Court Legal Services Committee.

The Bench after observing the conducted exercise, gave order to High Court Legal Services Committee of various High Courts to conduct a similar exercise and directed the NALSA to monitor the exercise.

The Court also directed Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee to consider the cases of such convicts who already have completed more than half of the jail term in case of fixed term sentences and was also asked to examine the chances of filing Bail applications before the High Court.

The Bench made such observations while it was dealing with the matter regarding the Appeals against conviction pending before the High Courts which are being looked after by the High Court Legal Services Committee.

A Special Leave Petition was filed before the Court in which the Petitioner has carried out the punishment of 10 years and is carrying out a default punishment by virtue of non-installment of fine.

The matter was also being heard with another SLP where the Court took the cognizance of the issue of unregular and untimely consideration as well as disposal of jail Petitions, Applications for remission and pre mature release of convicts, etc.
