Supreme Court dismisses petition pleading for president rule in UP

Supreme Court bench headed by CJI SA Bobde not only dismissed a PIL but also threatened to impose cost on the petitioner for the petition as well. The petition was filed by one Advocate CR Jaya Sukin who asked the Top Court to impose a Presidents rule in Uttar Pradesh.

The petition spoke of alleged breakdown of constitutional machinery and rising crime in the state, extra judicial killings, arbitrary killings and other such incidents.

The bench headed by CJI SA Bobde berated the petitioner asking him if he had even studied the crime records of other states ands questioned his research.

However, the petitioner stated that of the total number of crimes in India, more than 30% are in Uttar Pradesh. The petitioner mentioned the gangrape and murder of the 19 year old Dalit girl in Hathras, the detention of Dr. Kafeel Khan and the excessive police aggression towards anti-CAA protestors.

He also described the state as unsafe for women citing National Crime Record Bureau for India in 2019, which stated that Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of crimes against women.
