Subsequent to the event of successfully appointing 9 new judges in the Supreme Court of India, the Apex Court Collegium has recommended 68 names for elevation as Judges to 12 High Courts in one go, scripting history.

The three-member Supreme Court Collegium led by the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has made this unprecedented decision, keeping in mind a severe crunch being faced by the High Courts of India.

The 12 High Courts are Allahabad, Rajasthan, Calcutta, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madras, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Assam.

In the meetings held on August 25 and September 1, the Collegium cleared the names of 68 candidates among 112. Among the 68 candidates, 44 are from the Bar and 24 are from the Judicial Service.

The Collegium has recommended 10 women for the elevation to High Court Judges.

Meanwhile, the Collegium has sought further details about 16 candidates whose names were considered in its meetings.

The quickening of the pace of judicial appointments process both in the Supreme Court and the High Courts sends a strong message that the judiciary is determined to resolve the problem of vacancies with utmost priority.
