Recently, Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra made history by getting elected as the Chairperson of the Bar Council of India (BCI) unopposed for the 6th consecutive term.

This is the first time in the history of the Bar Council of India that someone has been elected unopposed, as the BCI Chairperson 6 consecutive times. Previously, Senior Advocate late Ram Jethmalani had been elected as Chairperson for four terms.

A press release by the Bar Council of India announced the results of the elections. It stated that Senior Advocate S Prabhakaran was elected Vice-Chairperson for the second consecutive term that too unopposed.

Apparently, the Bar Council elections were held on February 6, 2022, but the results were kept in sealed covers pursuant to the directions of the Karnataka High Court after the elections were challenged before the High Court by one of the members of the Bar Council.

The Karnataka High Court on February 1, refused to stay the elections and directed the BCI not to announce the results and keep the ballot papers in a sealed cover to be produced before the Court on the next date of hearing i.e. February 18.

The tenure of the newly elected officials will start from April 17th and they will remain in office until April 16th, 2025.
