A two-judge bench of the apex court issued a notice to the central government regarding the preservation of the 107-year-old Pratap Vilas Palace in Vadodara.

A Heritage Trust based in Vadodara approached the Supreme Court in order to stop the construction of a new building on the Palace premises.

The Gujarat HC had dismissed a PIL by the trust in June last year. The location of the building was shifted 321 feet away from the palace.

“The government and railways have to file a reply. The matter will be heard on September 29 during which the court will take further decision on the merits of the case,” said Jaydeep Verma, Joint Secretary, Heritage Trust.

However, the Heritage Trust also opposed the new location, arguing that the ecology of the campus was going to be destroyed.

The new building is supposed to be the National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI).
