Retired Ritu Raj Awasthi Appointed to Head 22nd Law Commission Constituted After 4 Yrs

Former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi was appointed as chairperson of Law Commission constituted by Centre after the gap of four years.

Other appointed members of the Commission are – Former Kerala High Court Judge Justice KT Sankaran, Prof. Anand Paliwal, Prof. DP Verma, Prof. (Dr) Raka Arya and Shri M Karunanithi.

Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi is known for heading Karnataka High Court bench which deliver the hijab verdict.

Justice Ritu completed her law graduation from Lucknow University in 1986, thereafter he enrolled as an advocate on February 1, 1987.

Before being appointed to the position of Judge, he handled civil, service, and educational matters in the Allahabad High Court‘s Lucknow Bench.  Before becoming Judge, he was named as the Assistant Solicitor General.

On April 13, 2009, he was elevated to the position of Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court, and on December 24, 2010, he was sworn in as a permanent judge. On October 11, 2021, he was appointed to serve as the Karnataka High Court’s Chief Justice.

On July 2 of this year, he announced his retirement.

Earlier, Justice BS Chauhan, served as the 21st Law Commission’s chairman till his retirement in August 2018.
