The Maharashtra Minister of State for Home and Information & Technology Satej Patil ordered the Mumbai Police to take cognizance against the creators of the app ‘Bulli Bai’ via which many Twitter Accounts were participating in auctioning of Indian Muslim Women

The Minister via his Twitter handle tweeted on January 1, 2022, “Digital platforms like these are rife with misogyny and communal hatred aimed at women. This is very disturbing and shameful. Maharashtra Govt. is taking strong actions against such platforms. I have instructed @MahaCyber1 for the same & they are on it.”

The case is pertaining to auctioning off of hundreds of Muslim women from India from accounts made on the online social media platform Twitter through hashtags like #Bullibai and #SulliDeals. The Auctioneers would put up pictures of these women on an online application called ‘Bulli Bai’ via using a host platform GitHub.

One of the women who is named in the app for auction, who turns out to be a journalist, stated that Muslim women “have had to start the year with a sense of fear and disgust”. The Delhi Police in this regard filed a First Information Report under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code.

In 2021, two First Information Reports (FIR) were filed by the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Delhi Police in regards with a controversy related to ‘Sulli Deals’, in which pictures of Muslim Women were used inappropriately.
