Mumbai: 602 people booked for violation of covid-19 restrictions

Mumbai Police detained 400 people and booked 602 others on Saturday as they enhanced enforcement of Covid-19 restrictions. Another 195 citizens were presented with notices, seven number of whom were untraceable.

As part of the weekend lockdown on Saturday, a total of 256 cases were reported against people who violated Covid rules and regulations, bringing the total number of recorded cases to 28,851 since March 20 of last year.

In the 256 cases, police arrested over 602 people under relevant sections of the IPC for disobeying orders given by public servants (Section 188), out of which 400 were released on bail, 195 were issued a notice, and seven are still at large.

According to Mumbai Police records, 71 of the 256 cases registered against violators on Saturday were against people who were found without mask and gathering in public.

According to the records, 43 cases were reported against COVID-related patients for evading quarantine, 11 cases against hotel establishments for rule violations, and some against betel nut shops.

Meanwhile, 59 lawsuits were filed against other businesses for violating COVID’s strict rules during the weekend lockout.

The majority of violations recorded on Saturday were in Mumbai’s western suburbs, specifically in the Bandra-Jogeshwari district, where 141 violations were recorded.
