A man has filed a petition before the Kerala High Court, expressing his dissatisfaction with the Road Transport Department’s failure to issue a hard copy of his renewed driving license, despite collecting fees for printing and dispatch.
The petitioner, who holds a valid driving license set to expire in March 2024, submitted an application for renewal along with the required documents and fees. In response, he was informed that a soft copy of the renewed driving license could be downloaded from DigiLocker and mParivahan mobile apps.
The petitioner contends that the Road Transport Department, after renewing the license, collected fees for printing and dispatch but failed to provide the hard copy. He argues that the collected fees should not be diverted by instructing individuals to download the license online. The petitioner speculates that the reason for not providing the hard copy is likely due to outstanding payments owed to the printing firm and the postal department for their services.
The plea highlights the inconvenience caused by the reliance on mobile apps for displaying the driving license, especially when the petitioner is not accustomed to carrying his mobile phone regularly.
The petitioner argues that even if his mobile is taken, there is no assurance of network coverage and sufficient battery charge at all locations where he might be required to present the driving license.
The matter is scheduled for a hearing before a single-judge bench of Justice N Nagaresh on February 13.
