Madras HC authorises Style Sheet for news articles about LGBTQIA+ Community

Madras High Court authorised a new style sheet/ standardised glossary to be followed while reporting news articles about the LGBTQIA+ community.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh while addressing a Plea by a same sex couple alleging harassment at the hands of police and their parents stated “This court wants to make an earnest request to the media to take into consideration the words and expressions mentioned in the glossary, to be used while addressing people belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Furthermore, the Judge noted that such words and expressions should be used regularly pertaining to a dignified identity for people belonging to this community.

The Madras High Court further highlighted the need to revamp the Medical Education Curriculum to sensitise Medical Practitioners.

Advocate S Manuraj, representing the Petitioners had circulated a short note focusing on the standardised guide/prescriptive glossary containing the words and expressions to be used by the press and media while addressing people belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.
