Madras High Court permitted News Year Celebrations in Puducherry but pressed restrictions on the Liquor sale.

The Bench of Justice S Vaidyanathan and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the Verdict on the Petition filed by the GA Jagannathan, resident of Puducherry, requesting ban on the New Year celebrations due to the rising Covid cases.

The Petitioner highlighted that the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu as well as Karnataka have not given the permission for the celebrations.

In its Verdict the Court Ordered that the sale of liquor should not be done between 10 pm of 31st December and 1st January, 2022.

However, the Petitioner asserted that the Puducherry government had given its permission for the celebrations without the knowledge of ground realities and the celebrations would confer into the spread and rise of Covid-19 or the new variant Omicron.
