Madras High Court disposed of a Petition filed by actor Dhanush about the payment of entry tax on Rolls Royce Ghost Car imported from the United Kingdom and directed the actor to pay the remaining entry tax of Rs 30,30,757 within 48 hours.

Justice S.M. Subramaniam issued the direction while disposing of a writ petition filed by the actor six years ago requesting tax exemption in total. He had been using the car since then, after complying with an interim order to pay 50% of the total entry tax demanded from him.

However, now when the writ petition was listed for final hearing, just a fortnight after the judge passed a scathing order in a similar case filed by actor Vijay, Mr. Dhanush’s counsel Vijayan Subramanian told the Court that his client was willing to pay the tax in full and wants to withdraw the Writ Petition.

Undoubtedly, the State suffers huge revenue loss for many years, as these tax dues are not collected on account of the interim orders granted and due to pendency of the writ petitions” the Court remarked.

In addition, the Court stated that “The petitioner has suppressed his identity by not revealing his profession and therefore, it has to be construed that the writ petition is filed without furnishing the requisite details, amounts to suppression of facts.”

The Court disposed the matter and passed the subsequent directions:

1) Relief, as sought for in this Writ Petition, to stand rejected.

2) Petitioner is directed to pay the balance arrears of Entry Tax of Rs. 30,30,757.00, as demanded by the respondents, within 48 hours.

3) The Registry, High Court, Madras, is directed to ensure that affidavits filed by the litigants in Writ Petitions are entertained in compliance with the requirements contemplated under the Madras High Court Writ Rules, 2021.
