As a moment of pride, the Law Ministry, on January 12 said that over one Crore cases were settled by the four National Lok Adalats that were held last year.

A statement by Law Ministry read, “The 1,27,87,329 cases settled in 2021 included 55,81,117 pending cases and a record 72,06,212 pre-litigation cases”.

The statement also read that a cumulative effect of all the preparatory and mobilization measures were the reason behind such efficient disposal figures of 2021.

Lok Adalats, where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably, serves as one of the significant components of the Alternative Dispute Resolution system.

Recently, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) came up with a decision to lay more emphasis on the National Lok Adalat to serve as an effective means for disposal of huge number of pending cases in India. Besides that, Lok Adalat delivers efficient and inexpensive justice to the common man by settling disputes.

To deal with the complications of the pandemic, the legal services authorities made use of technology and introduced virtual Lok Adalats, also called “e-Lok Adalats”. Since then, all the Lok Adalats have been operating in both physical and virtual mode.
