The Kerala High Court has summoned the State Police Chief following allegations of a police officer verbally abusing an advocate, stressing the importance of maintaining civility in policing.

In response to an incident in Palakkad district where a police officer reportedly used abusive language against an advocate, Justice Devan Ramachandran expressed concern, highlighting previous court directives and a circular from the State Police Chief emphasizing respectful treatment of citizens.

Despite earlier Court orders, Justice Ramachandran noted ongoing instances of police misconduct, stating that the recurring need to remind officers to treat citizens with dignity and civility is unacceptable.

The Court emphasized that while circulars are issued, their implementation is crucial, urging the State Police Chief to ensure adherence in both letter and spirit.

Government pleader Sunil Kumar Kuriakose assured the court of the State Police Chief’s serious investigation into the matter. The Court adjourned proceedings for ten days, seeking a comprehensive response from the State Police Chief.

Acknowledging public concerns, the Court also scheduled an online interaction with the State Police Chief on January 18, 2024, to discuss future steps in addressing the issue.
