The Karnataka High Court has decided to close the suo motu case it initiated regarding the police attack on a young lawyer in Chikkamagaluru, allegedly over a traffic violation.

The court noted that the State government has acted promptly, and the Crime Investigation Department (CID) is conducting a preliminary investigation.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice PB Varale and Justice Krishna S Dixit, refused to set a timeline for the CID probe or order disciplinary action against police officers.

The court urged caution against generalizing all police officers as wrongdoers and closed the case but left room for further objections if needed.

The case emerged after a lawyer, Advocate NT Preetham, was allegedly attacked by police officers in Chikmagalur for not wearing a helmet. Protests and the suspension of six police officials followed the incident.

The court had earlier questioned the Karnataka government’s commitment to enacting a lawyers’ protection bill and subsequently set up a high-level committee.
