Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul Appointed as Executive Chairman of NALSA by President

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Supreme Court has been appointed by the president of India to serve as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

The official announcement on November 25, 2022, by the Ministry of Law and Justice states:

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Hon’ble Shri Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with immediate effect”

According to the Legal Services Authority Act of 1987, the Chief Patron of the NALSA is the Chief Justice of India. An active or retired Supreme Court judge is chosen by the President and the Chief Justice of India to serve as Executive Chairman.

The second senior Supreme Court judge traditionally holds the position of Executive Chairman of NALSA. The current Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, formerly held the position.

Justice Kaul is the senior most judge after CJI. Former Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, the Punjab High Court, and the Haryana High Court. He was a former judge of the Delhi High Court and an acting Chief Justice during that time.
