India almost at a point of national emergency: CJI Bobde

The Supreme Court on Thurday has taken a suo moto cognisance on supply of oxygen and essential drugs. CJI while taking the decision said “India almost at a point of National Emergency”. 

A three-judge Bench of Supreme Court, headed by CJI SA Bobde, asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit or inform the Court by providing a national plan, after recording the fact that at least 6 different High Courts have been hearing the matter regarding Covid-19 situation.

The Bench issued notice to the Centre and decided to hear the matter on Friday.

Senior Advocate Harish Salve has been appointed as amicus curiae by the Supreme Court to assist it in suo motu case on COVID-19 management.

“We have 4 issues primarily in mind – supply of oxygen, supply of essential drugs and manner of vaccination,” said the CJI.

The Court will also examine the judicial power of High Courts to declare lockdown amid a massive wave in the number of COVID-19 cases.
