The Gujarat High Court on December 17 rejected a Public Interest Litigation against the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Notification restricting entry of unvaccinated people on its premises.
A Bench comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Niral Mehta stated that “It is very essential to get vaccinated with two doses as prescribed to protect themselves from the threat of Covid-19, more particularly the new variant, namely, Omicron. It’s time for people to take the third dose of booster.”
Five citizens had filed a PIL alleging that the Centre had pronounced that Vaccination is not mandatory and hence, AMC cannot pressurize the citizens for vaccination by restraining their entry in AMC buildings.
The PIL was dismissed on the grounds that AMC’s campaign was in Public Interest.
Further the Court supported AMC’s argument that the step has been undertaken to guarantee that there is no third wave of the Covid Pandemic, pertaining to the new variant Omicron.
The Gujarat High Court expressed dissatisfaction at citizens approaching the Court challenging the measures taken for Covid-19 by AMC.
The Court stated “On the contrary, as law abiding citizens, we expect them to extend full co-operation to the authorities. One should not forget the worst of the nightmares given by the Covid-19 continuously for a period of two years.”
