On January 22, 2021, official sources gave information to the press that the Central government had given ‘Z+’ cover, one of the highest categories of VIP security cover status to the prior CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

They stated that the 66-year-old former judge would be protected by the CRPF’s (Central Reserve Police Force) armed commandos while he traveled across the entire country.

Currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, Mr Gogoi was previously given the Delhi Police’s security cover.

He had retired in November in the year 2019 and had been nominated later on to the Rajya Sabha by the Centre.

Sources had informed that in the VIP security unit of the CRPF, Gogoi was officially their 63rd protectee.

They also stated that a mobile team of around 8-12, armed CRPF commandos would be in charge of protecting the former CJI while he travelled and that his house would also be guarded by a team of similar composition.
