First FIR registered under new ‘Love Jihad’ Law in UP

Just after a day of enforcement of Yogi Adityanath-led government new ordinance against ‘Love Jihad’, a First Information Report (FIR) registered in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh against a man for allegedly tricking a girl into marriage for the purpose of converting her religion.

Uttar Pradesh police has registered a case after receiving a complaint from the victim’s father and directed the arrest of the accused. Father of girl lodged a complaint against Uwais Ahmed who reportedly befriended his daughter while they were studying, father accused that now this man is pressurizing the girl to get convert to islam and get married to him.

Father of victim claimed that accused has threatened to kill his family members if he opposed the marriage. UP Police took a quick action and registered against accused under new law at Deorania police station of Bareilly.

The new law will provide jail term of 1to 5 years or Rs 15,000 penalty or both for forceful or unlawful religious conversions. Government has made special provisions for conversions of minors and women of SC/SC community, there will be jail term of 3 to 10 years or Rs 25,000 penalty or both.
