The Government of Madhya Pradesh approved a scheme on Tuesday to give financial aid to domestic violence victims who have suffered permanent disability.

‘Gharelu Hinsa Ki Peedita Ke Liye Sahita Yojna’ will protect females in the state who have suffered permanent disability as a result of the injuries inflicted by blood relatives or during marital relations.

The scheme will give financial support of up to Rs 2 lakh to someone who has suffered up to 40% permanent disability and Rs 4 lakh to those who suffered more than 40% permanent disability.

The scheme was devised after Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan became aware of three heinous Cases of Domestic Violence in a span of 17 days. Hands and legs of women were severed by their husbands in all three cases.

Chouhan not only stated the attacks as barbaric, but also emphasized the need for stringent laws to prevent such incidents in future. He had asked the DGP to make sure that the Charge Sheet is lodged without delay, making sure that Victims receive timely Justice.

Ashok Shah, Additional Chief Secretary of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department told The Indian Express that it was after these tragedies that the Chief Minister asked for a system to be formed to give aid to women experiencing Violence at the hands of their own relatives.

The core principle was that the Government should be allowed to intervene and protect women who are unable to turn to their own relatives.

The scheme which was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday states that a victim of domestic violence, whether she is a married woman or a girl who has suffered permanent disability, can seek help from the District Protection Officer or a State-Run One-Stop Centre. Within one year of the attack, victims can notify the District Protection Officer either directly or through an application.

The District Protection Officer or One-Stop Centre Officials will then visit the victim and make sure that an FIR is filed in the matter.

Following that the Case will be heard by a four-member committee comprised of the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police. The application must be processed within one month of its receipt by the District Administration.
