The Delhi Court issued notice on the Plea seeking COVID-19 protocol compliant maternal care centres across Delhi for the safety and protection of lactating mothers and pregnant women.

Justice Rekha Palli has sought a response from the Centre and the state in two weeks to file counter-affidavits.

The Plea has been filed by several pregnant women, in their 3 trimster stating that they faced severe impediments in accessing basic healthcare facilities in government hospitals and maternity centres during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Plea seeks directions from the Centre and States to provide critical care and entitlements as mandated by the law during their pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum and also for releasing funds from the Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana (PMMVJ).

Advocate Jyoti Satpute appearing for the Petitioners submitted that although there are several financial assistance schemes in place for pregnant women belonging to economically backward classes, there are several impediments to avail the benefits, primarily because they had not registered themselves under the said schemes within the prescribed time limit.

Jyoti, therefore, prayed that government hospitals be cognizant of such issues and ensure that pregnant women like the current Petitioners do not run backwards and forwards for basic health entitlements as assured by the Government.
