The Delhi High Court directed the Delhi Police to submit a status report in relation to the custodial death of 23-year old under trial, Dilsher Azad within three days.

It also sought clarification on whether any chargesheet or FIR has been registered against the accused.

Justice Pratibha Singh while hearing the case had also suggested increasing the time limit of CCTV footages stored over there. “I had visited the Tihar jail once, and they have a very small time limit for which they preserve the CCTV footage. Nowadays we have cloud servers, so the issue with storage space is not there anymore. We should increase the time for storage of CCTV footages,” the bench noted.

Azad was arrested and had been kept in Tihar Jail since Sept 19, 2019. On 30th November 2020, the sudden death of Azad was informed to his father.

Even after repeated queries, the exact reason of his death was not conveyed to his father. Later, through his advocate, the information that “Azad was found dead with knife injuries, specifically 9 wounds on his body” was revealed.
