The Bench of Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta had adjourned the plea of anticipatory bail of Member of Parliament Karti P Chidambaram.

Advocates Arshdeep Singh and Akshat Gupta informed the Court that Senior Advocate Kabil Sibal who was going to represent the Karti in the Court got infected with COVID-19. The Court then listed the next hearing on June 24.

Earlier the Bench of Justice Poonam A Bamba was hearing the matter and reserved decision but then the case was given to Vacation Bench due to the reason of new development that is citied by the Karti’s counsel.

On June 3, the Trial Court has rejected the application of anticipatory bail on ground that offence is of serious nature.

The ED probe the case since CBI had filed the complaint of 50 lakh rupees bribe against Karti. It was alleged that Karti had allotted 263 visas to Chinese nationals and accepted gifts against it. At that time his father, P Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister.

The case was booked under Prevention of Money Laundering Act although the amount and process used in laundering is unclear.

The claimed in earlier hearing of anticipatory bail in front of Trial Court that it is just imagination and there is no real apprehension.

The ED clarified that till now Karti is not even given summon and that is why it is not the correct stage where anticipatory bail should be asked and given. This application is not genuine.
