A Special Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Lucknow summoned Director Netflix India LLP Abhishek Nag, Documentary Maker Nick Read and Producer Reva Sharma for a Criminal Defamation complaint filed by Sahara.
Sahara filed the defamation complaint for a documentary series titled ‘Bad Boy Billionaires’.
The documentary series, narrates the early lives and rise of Sahara Group Chairman Subrata Roy Sahara and fellow fallen tycoons Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.
As per the Complaint, the makers drew a parallelism between lives of Sahara and Mallya and Nirav, both of whom are absconders.
According to Court, a crime under IPC Sections 500 (Punishment for defamation), 501 (Printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory), 502 ( sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter) was made out against the Netflix trio.
The Complainant contended that the Accused prepared and released the series on Netflix on 5th October, 2020 in Defamatory manner to harm the image of Sahara and its Chief.
