Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde appreciated the introduction of an artificial intelligence portal with an objective to assist judges with their legal research.

SUPACE – Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Courts Efficiency, was launched by CJI Bobde in a virtual event attended by CJI designate Justice NV Ramana and Chairman of Supreme Court’s AI Committee, Justice Nageswara Rao along with several High Court Judges.

In his inauguration speech, CJI Bobde referred the system as a ‘perfect blend of human intelligence and machine learning’ as the interaction between judges and the database makes it remarkable. CJI also addressed the criticisms faced by AI and clarified that that objections of ‘automated decision making’ is altogether unnecessary as the system has been designed merely to make relevant facts and laws available for the judges and not in any way hinder the discretion and autonomy of judges.

CJI remarked, “It is our view and is in consistence of each judge, that the decision must be left to him, a machine not ought to dictate it”.

CJI also addressed the concerns of unemployment raised with launch of AI system and maintained that no redundancy is created in the judiciary and if anything is minimized, it is the over time officers in Registry were subjected to.

CJI Designate, Justice Ramana applauded the system, considering that it will be helpful in reducing large-scale pendency in judiciary.
