Chief Justice of India Appoints Five Advocates to Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

The Chief Justice of India has appointed five advocates as members of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. These appointments, endorsed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in its notification on December 23, 2023.

The advocates appointed include the following advocates: Senior Advocates Vibha Datta Makhija, Siddhartha Dave, and Aparajita Singh, along with Advocates Mohammad Shoeb Alam and K. Parameshwar Krishnaswamy.

NALSA operates under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, aiming to offer proficient legal assistance to underprivileged segments of society. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud serves as the Patron-in-Chief of NALSA.

The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) was established to provide free legal aid specifically through the Supreme Court. Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, empowers the Central Authority to form the SCLSC, empowering it to execute designated functions. Notably, the Central Authority recently nominated Justice BR Gavai as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
