On Monday, October 25, the Centre assured the Supreme Court that the NEET-PG counselling process will not begin until the Top Court rules on the challenge to the 27% Other Backward Class and 10% EWS Reservation in PG All India Quota seats (MBBS/BDS and MD/MS/MDS) from the current academic session.

The assurance given by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) KM Nataraj, arguing for the Centre, was recorded by the Bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and B V Nagarathna, observed that students will be in significant trouble if the counselling procedure proceeds as planned.

“The counselling process will not begin till the Court decides on the pending batch of Petitions, “ the Additional Solicitor General stated.

The Bench remarked, “We will take your word on record that the counselling process will not start till we decide the batch of Petitions one way or the other. You know, students will have a serious problem if the process continues. “

The Supreme Court had asked the Centre on October 21 if it wanted to examine the eight lakh annual income threshold for defining the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category for Reservation in NEET medical admissions.

The Supreme Court underlined that it is not delving into policy issues, but rather is attempting to determine if Constitutional principles have been followed.
