The Central Administrative Tribunal Bar Association moved Gauhati HC challenging the appointment of retired Chief Justice of Meghalaya HC, Justice Ranjit Vasantrao as CAT Chairperson.

The CAT body has contended that the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) which was responsible for the appointment had violated the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021 and the rules made under the Act.

Incomplete applications without requisite documents annexed as per the recommended format were still considered in contravention of Rule 4 (2), (4) and 5 (2) of the Tribunals (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021 and also the specific terms of the vacancy notification of April 4, 2022.

Further, the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and Rules of 2021 framed under the Act had given additional importance to the applicants who rendered long service and had a long association with CAT.

The Bar body, therefore, pleaded that the recommendation to appoint Justice More “made in violation of the rules and terms of advertisement of April 4 may be set aside and quashed”.
