Austria’s Federal Government submitted a draft Law to make Assisted Suicide for seriously ill adults legal.

The drafted Law specifies the conditions under which Assisted Suicide will be possible in the future.

This followed a ruling by Austria’s Constitutional Court which banned Assisted Suicide contending it to be unconstitutional as it violated a person’s Right to Self-determination.

“Seriously ill people should have access to assisted suicide,” the Federal Chancellery said in the statement.

The Law allows chronically ill adults to make provisions for Assisted Suicide.

They have to consult two doctors who will attest to the person whether he is capable of making his/her own decision.

A delay of 12 weeks is respected, but that can be reduced to two weeks for patients in the final phase of illness.

Spain became the fourth European Union country to allow Euthanasia.
