The Cabinet Appointments Committee approved the Department of Financial Services proposal to appoint Presiding Officers to 18 Debt Recovery Tribunals on Sunday.

The Central Government approved the appointment of chairpersons to the five Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunals last week (DRATs).

This came a day after the Supreme Court expressed its displeasure, claiming that the bureaucracy was taking tribunal appointments lightly. The Supreme Court had repeatedly summoned the Central Government due to the alarming situation of burgeoning vacancies at several DRTs and DRATs.

The Kerala High Court noted earlier this month that both DRTs in the state had been inactive for several months, preventing litigants from accessing courts and causing them great distress Regardless, the Central Government has shown scant regard for the litigants’ hardships, according to the High Court.
