The Allahabad High Court has recently expressed its concern about the circulation of indecent videos on social media, which it considers a significant societal menace that degrades the community.
Justice Ajay Bhanot emphasized the importance of the police authorities conducting thorough investigations in such cases to combat this issue effectively.
However, the Court observed that the quality of investigations carried out by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police in such matters appears to be subpar. This deficiency in investigation quality could potentially lead to social conflicts, as noted by the Court.
The Court’s remarks came during the consideration of a bail application from an individual accused of circulating obscene videos of a woman on social media. Despite witness statements confirming the circulation of these videos, the State police was unsuccessful in retrieving the incriminating content.
In response, the Court called for appropriate instructions to be given to senior police officials in the districts to ensure rigorous supervision and improve the quality of investigations. It directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to take immediate measures to address any deficiencies in the police force’s functioning concerning such offenses.
The Court also expressed concern that previous directions from the Court had not been followed, and the police had failed to enhance their proficiency in investigating Information Technology (IT) related offenses.
To rectify this situation, the Court instructed the Government Advocate to provide a copy of the order to the DGP and the Uttar Pradesh government, urging them to address the following aspects:
- Poor quality of investigation and supervision.
- Inadequate proficiency of police investigators dealing with IT-related offenses.
The case will be further heard on November 20, with Advocate Siddharth Singh representing the bail applicant.
