51 people Sentenced to Death by Congo Military Court, in relation with killing of 2 UN experts

A Military Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sentenced 51 people to Death over the killing of two experts of the United Nations in 2017. The United Nation’s experts were killed by group of armed fighters called Kamuina Nsapu.

In March, 2017 two members of the United Nations vis-a-vis Zaida Catalan of Swedish-Chilean descent and Michael Sharp from the United States of America, were present in the Kasai region of Democratic Republic of Congo, conducting an Investigation of Alleged mass killings of people after a fight broke out between a militia group and Government forces.

The dead bodies of the two were found along with the dead body of their interpreter named Betu Tshintela, 16 days after they were Abducted and killed. Officials of the Government of Democratic Republic of Congo have Alleged that the people who killed the three were belonging to group of armed fighters called Kamuina Nsapu.

The unrest in the Kasai region had broken out after a traditional leader was killed in August 2016. Hundreds of people were killed as a result of the conflict that arose between the Government and armed militia groups.

In this regard, a Military Court Convicted 51 people out 54 who were Accused of charges under many Offences such as Terrorism, Murder, participation in an Insurrectional movement and the Act of a War Crime through Mutilation. Although Capital Punishment is frequently pronounced in the country, but the Punishment would be commuted to Life Imprisonment as Congo declared Moratorium on Executions in 2003.
