38 Convicts Sentenced to Death in relation to 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Blast Case

Usman Agarbattiwala, the only person convicted under the Arms Act and among those sentenced to death, was also sentenced for a year in prison for his conviction under the Arms Act. The remaining 11 were sentenced to life in prison under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 and UAPA Sections 10 and 16 (1) (a) (b). A fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed on each of them.

Under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, the court sentenced 38 of the 49 convicts to death. The 11 others were sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Judge A R Patel also awarded compensation of Rs one lakh each to those killed in the blasts, as well as Rs 50,000 for each victim with serious injuries and Rs 25,000 each for those with minor injuries. The court also fined the Defendants Rs 2.85 lakh each.

On February 8, Patel found 49 of the 78 accused guilty of various Indian Penal Code Offences, including Murder, Sedition, and Waging war against the State, as well as UAPA and Explosive Substances Act Offences.

On July 26, 2008, bombs exploded in Ahmedabad at various locations, including the state government-run civil hospital Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run LG Hospital, on buses, parked bicycles, in cars, and elsewhere, killing 56 people.
