The current flow of retirement statements from the Judges of the US Supreme Court has given way to President Joe Biden to recommend appropriate candidates for the position.
Biden had reportedly vowed to appoint a Black Woman as the Supreme Court Judge during his Presidential Campaigns. However, his promise allowed experts to analyse the present representation of Black Women in the highest Court.
Research by the Federal Judicial Centre revealed that the representation of Black Women in the Courts of US roughly stands at 5%. Aimee Allison, the founder of She The People, had attributed the present status to the limited availability for Black Women.
Several Advocates and experts are expecting the scenario to change with Biden’s presence. “I’m looking forward to making sure there’s a Black woman on the Supreme Court, to make sure we in fact get every representation,” Biden stated in a debate. He later also submitted that potential candidates were being listed for nominations.
Biden’s move is in sharp contraction to that of Trump’s as the latter primarily concentrated on choosing nominees majorly to impress the evangelical voters.
If Biden succeeds in bringing in the first Black Woman to the Supreme Court, that would be one of the greatest achievements for the President in his term.
Advocates hope that the “expected wave of retiring judges would give President Joe Biden a chance to address a startling lack of diversity on the federal bench.”
According to Pew Research Centre Data, Trump’s administration witnessed a decline in women appointees as compared to Obama’s presidency. The percentage of ethnic and racial minority groups went even down.
The potential candidates for the same can be Ketanji Brown Jackson, Leondra Kruger, Sherrilyn Ifill, Melissa Murray among many others.
Senior Advisor Tamara Brummer said, “the Supreme Court is in desperate need of lawyers with experience representing real people and the interests of justice and democracy.” “Black women have been on the front lines of the fight to protect and defend our democracy, so it’s no surprise that there are a plethora of brilliant Black women lawyers who would bring badly-needed experience to the Court,” added Brummer.
Thus, it is highly supposed that Biden’s promise could create a new history in the US Federal Judicial System.
