Amongst India other UN members votes to consider cannabis as not a dangerous narcotic

In UN ongoing 63rd session memebers like India US and UK lead to changes in the way cannabis is regulated internationally.

The member nation of UN drug policy body voted to remove cannabis from most tightly avoided drugs in the countries.

The India also voted to detach cannabis and cannabis resin in majority of United Nations.The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) will decide the future of cannabis internationally in it’s 63rd session.

Earlier among 53 UN countries india, the United States and most European nations — voted  for removing cannabis from the schedule .but Twenty-five countries, including China, Pakistan, and Russia, voted against for removing. Ukrain was one absentention .

Again it was in January 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) put forward six recommendations including, the deletion of cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule.

The UN reported that cannabis was in strictly controlled schedule for 56 years which will reduce it’s medical utility.Therefore cannabis is removed from the Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs .

The UN stated that “the CND has opened the door to recognizing the medicinal and therapeutic potential of the commonly-used but still largely illegal recreational drug”.

The production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transport, and use of cannabis is illegal in India under the Under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and charas is a purifified form of cannabis .

The Cannabis and cannabis substance resin will remain on Schedule I, which contain least dangerous category of substances. Each countries are following individual regulation for drugs so the decision of UN will not make any difference but still many countries follow international protocol while legislation.

over 50 countries allow medicinal purpose of cannabis and like Canada, Uruguay and 15 US states, legalised cannabis it was in the Vienna-based CND, in 1946 made cannabis in schedule of global drug control conventions after that atitude towards the drugs changed drastically.
