Bombay High Court, while referring to an affidavit filed by the deputy secretary of the State health department, said that the Maharashtra Government seems not at all serious in protecting its doctors against attacks by kin of patients.

The bench has earlier asked the government in its order to list number of FIR’s registered in cases of assault to doctors and medical staff thereby informing the steps taken to protect them.

While the government submitted that 436 FIR’s were registered on the issue, they failed miserably to provide with the details of the cases.

The bench has now directed the deputy secretary of the State Health department to file a fresh affidavit by next week including the suggestions submitted by the petitioners for protecting the medical staff.

The PIL was filed by Dr Rajeev Joshi seeking judicial intervention to curb violence against healthcare professionals since according to him, Maharashtra witnesses maximum number of such incidents of violence.

The matter is listed for further hearing on 27 May.
