On July 9, Radhakrishnan, a 72-year-old Former kerala home mister who had spent his career with Coal India, was having a peaceful day at his home in Kozhikode. Little did he know that this day would take a distressing turn that would serve as a cautionary tale for many.
In morning, Radhakrishnan’s phone abruptly rang. The voice at the other end claimed to be an ‘old colleague’ who was facing a dire and urgent need for hospital funds. A sense of compassion washed over Radhakrishnan, prompting him to consider helping. However, he also had a lingering suspicion that this might be a spam call.
Refusing to be easily convinced, Radhakrishnan requested evidence that this wasn’t just another scam call. In response, the caller, whom he believed to be his former colleague, initiated a video call. The two engaged in conversation, further strengthening Radhakrishnan’s belief in the authenticity of the plea for help. Radhakrishnan was now Convinced that he was assisting a friend in dire need, Radhakrishnan promptly transferred INR 40,000 to the provided account.
However, the shocking revelation that followed left Radhakrishnan in a state of disbelief. He now firmly asserts that the voice and video of the person he had been conversing with were, in fact, the result of a deepfake—a highly sophisticated manipulation of audio and video content using artificial intelligence.
In response to this disturbing incident, Radhakrishnan has taken action by filing a formal complaint at the Cybercrime Police Station in Kozhikode. He has invoked sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology (IT) Act of 2000. These legal measures aim to address and combat online fraud and deception, underscoring the severity of the issue.
