Cairo Criminal Court upholds life sentence of Mahmoud Ezzat, former Muslim Brotherhood leader

Cairo Criminal Court in Egypt stalled the life imprisonment awarded to Mahmoud Ezzat, former acting Supreme guide of Muslim Brotherhood, on the grounds of impersonality.

Mahmoud was taken into Custody in 2020 and was convicted for the Charges of Conspiration with foreign powers to sabotage Egypt.

He was also Charged for leaking the confidential Defence details to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, with an intention to boost up the Muslim Brotherhood’s political power in the territory at the risk of Egypt’s national security.

“Ezzat even hosted the military trainings with Hamas militants in Gaza strip”, states the documents by the Court.

Ezzat had joined the Muslim Brotherhood group in 1960s and studied under one of its significant leaders, Sayyib Qotb. Ever since then he had been Arrested multiple times for his participation with the organization.

He had served between 1965 to 1975 which was the longest sentence he had received.

Ezzat being group’s longest serving member protested against the Israeli military strikes in Gaza stripe after which he was again Arrested in 2008.

But in 2011, he escaped from the prison in the period of political disturbance.

In 2013 the first wave of Arrests was executed in which majority of the leader of the brotherhood group were captured but Ezzat was the only person to dodge this Arrest and escape.

Ezzat was then sentenced to death for absentia as he broke out the jail and for stirring up the strikes and protests in the Egyptian capital to expel the President Abdel Fattah El SiSi.

He went into hiding after the death Order released against him and was Arrested in 2020 in the raid in Cairo.Following his Arrest and retrial Ezzat’s punishment was reduced from Death sentence to life imprisonment in April.

Ezzat’s defence counsel had however appealed against the life sentence awarded to him but the Special Terrorism Court upheld the Verdict.Ezzat is declared the man behind the Brotherhood’s military operations and all the anti -national activities in Egypt.

Egypt’s Interior Military gave the statement that Ezzat was the reason behind the multiple car bombings that killed dozens of people including former Prosecutor General and dMilitary General and many other security officers.
