Supreme Court asked the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to resolve their water dispute concerning the sharing of water of River Krishna, amicably.

“I don’t want to hear this matter legally. I belong to both States. If the matter can be settled in mediation, please do that. We can help with that. Otherwise, I will transfer this to another Bench,” Chief Justice of India NV Ramana stated.

In the present case, Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave appeared for the State of Andhra Pradesh and Senior Advocate CS Vaidyanathan appeared on behalf of the State of Telangana.

CJI Ramana, while addressing both the Senior Advocates stressed that the Top Court didn’t wish to unnecessarily intervene in the matter.

“I wish that both of you convince your Governments and settle the matter. We don’t want to interfere unnecessarily”, CJI Ramana further added.

Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave sought some time to seek instructions concerning the matter, and hence, the matter has been listed for further hearing on 4th August.

The CJI made the following statements while hearing a writ petition which was filed by the State of Andhra Pradesh seeking direction to the Union of India to notify the Krishna River Management Board’s (KRMB) jurisdiction under Section 87 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014.

Further, the petition also sought directions to KRMB to abide by the decision of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT-I) till the notification of their jurisdiction.

State of Andhra Pradesh filed the petition as allegedly the State of Telangana, in contravention of the rules of the integrated operation of the Reservoirs and the provisions of the 2015 Agreement, was indiscriminately drawing water from River Krishna for power use.
