Velu Narayanasamy is the former Chief Minister of Pudicherry. He is politically affiliated to Indian National Congress.

BACKGROUND– He was born in a humble family to Velu a toddy tapper, and Eswariammal. V Narayanasamy was the first one in his family to graduate. He was the eldest son in his family. He was married to N Kalaiselvi and had two children.

UPBRINGING & EDUCATION- He hails from Poornankuppam village, Ariyankuppam, Puducherry. V Narayanasamy did his schooling from Ariyankuppam, Puducherry in 1965 and graduated from Tagore Arts College, Lawspet, Puducherry, in 1969. He did his Bachelor of Law from Madras Law College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu in 1969 and Master of Law in 1973 from Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. He practiced for a few years and then joined politics.

WALK OF LIFE– Narayanasamy has played a key role in all of the major political upheavals in Puducherry. He joined the Indian National Congress in his late twenties. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi nominated him as the Rajya Sabha member of parliament from Puducherry in 1985. He was made the General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC). He held several important posts including that of the Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and Public Affairs during United Progressive Alliance (UPA) I and II.

He was a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. He was three times member of parliament, Rajya Sabha, and was a member of Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014 from the Puducherry constituency. He was elected as the Chief Minister of the Union Territory in the year 2016. In February 2021 he resigned from the position after the Congress government lost its majority in the legislative assembly and failed the floor test.

CONTROVERSIES– He faced a lot of backlashes when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the union territory, the Chief Minister falsely translated the accusation against him into a compliment when the fisherwoman of Puducherry accused him of not visiting them after the cyclone.
